What is Generative AI?

Defining Generative AI 

In simple terms, Generative AI is a type of AI where you provide the AI with an input (like a text prompt) and it generates something as an output (like an image, or text). ChatGPT is one example of Generative AI.

Generative AI is a facet of artificial intelligence that focuses on algorithms capable of generating new data that shares similar characteristics with the existing data they were trained on.  

In simpler terms, think of Generative AI as a creative artist who, after studying a genre of painting extensively, can produce new paintings that resonate with the same style yet are original creations. 

One of the most popular forms of Generative AI is Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs). In a GAN, two neural networks – a Generator and a Discriminator – work in tandem. The Generator creates new data, while the Discriminator evaluates the generated data against the real data. Through continuous iteration, the Generator gets better at producing realistic data, be it images, text, or sounds, that can be nearly indistinguishable from real data. 

The essence of Generative AI lies in its ability to learn patterns, nuances, and key elements from existing data and craft new data that holds true to those learned aspects. This quality of Generative AI opens a door to many applications, from creating realistic images and videos to generating textual content and more. 

How Does Generative AI Work? 

The magic of Generative AI unfolds through its algorithms. These algorithms are trained on vast datasets, absorbing the inherent patterns, structures, and features present in the data.  

Here’s how it works:  

  • Training on Existing Data: Initially, Generative AI algorithms are exposed to existing data—be it images, text, or sounds. They study this data extensively to understand its inherent patterns and characteristics 
  • Learning and Generating: Post training, these algorithms take on the mantle of creators. They begin generating new data that mirrors the characteristics of the training data, yet is distinct and new. For instance, after being trained on a dataset of classical music, a Generative AI could compose new melodies that carry the classical essence 
  • Refinement through Feedback: Generative AI systems often operate in a feedback loop where the generated data is evaluated for quality and resemblance to real data. Any discrepancies noted serve as feedback, which the algorithms use to refine their generating process, enhancing the quality and realism of the produced data over time 
  • Output: The end result is a set of new, unique data, generated based on the learned patterns from the training data. This could be a new piece of music, a realistic image, or a well-composed article, all crafted by the AI
